A little mouse named Evie lived in a quaint little town near the forest. This little mouse spent his days baking, mending clothes, and keeping his house neat and tidy. However, these things are not what gave him joy in life; instead, he did these things because that was what was expected of her. Evie’s true passion, the one she spent hours daydreaming about, was writing poetry.
One day he goes to the forest with paper and pen in hand; she sees some rabbits and composes a poem about them there. From there, he writes more until he ends up on a bench talking to Brayden Fox. Now Brayden recognizes that Evie is talented and encourages her to think about what she really wants in life and focus on that, not what other people think. What should you be doing with your time?
The mouse of poetry Written by Derek R. King and Julie L. Kusma, it is a beautifully written children’s story and a collection of poetry woven together to create a whimsical book that children and adults alike can enjoy. Evie the mouse’s story is cute and adorable, with watercolor images illustrating the pages. This is a story of self-discovery, breaking the mold that society says you have to fit into. It teaches children that they don’t have to fit into stereotypical molds and that they can follow their passions in life and be happy. Encourage children to dream and act to make those dreams come true.
The second half of this wonderful book is the poetry of Evie the mouse. Placed on the pages of illustrations from her diary, it adds to the feeling that the little mouse is composing and sharing a part of her dream with readers. Every poem written about nature is filled with passion and wonder. The poem about the owl gliding across the night sky was my favorite. I can imagine the soft feathers as they glide to earth as the Owl moves across the silhouette of the moon. The poetry is organic, drawing the reader back to a moment in time. They will glimpse nature in its pure form during that single breath of time. It’s not often that such simple poetry can have the power to make you stop and visualize a single moment that, if stated otherwise, would have been mundane. King and Kusma take the ordinary and make it awesome.
The poetry mouse is an amazing children’s poetry book that will bring joy and wonder to children reading the story and looking at the beautiful artwork. Adults will find a deeper message in the story, one of following your dreams and stopping to appreciate the simple things in life. This storybook is one that readers will want to own and keep on the shelf for years to come.
