Children’s Book Review: Review: Violin and Cello

There is something quite magical about listening to and playing acoustic music, especially when it comes to stringed instruments. It is something pure and uplifting. Resonant. Moving, even!

violin and cello is a children’s book with a special and wonderful added bonus in the form of a musical score. I was hooked from the start, poring over the intricate illustrations and wondering about the families who lived in the cozy apartments that take up the first double page spread.

A balcony is decorated with flower pots, a sofa, open doors, fairy lights adorned around the windows, and a burst of sunlight. The other is more austere and neat, but still with a very attractive exterior, complete with cat.The story involves two boys who live next door to each other in city apartments but never meet. Their homes are different in terms of culture, decor, food, and lifestyle, but in one important sense, they are the same. Both are home to children who play music.

violin and cello shows how these mystery friends become musical friends, through their shared love of playing music. They learn individually and through the story their curiosity and friendship grow, allowing them to play and act together.

As a parent whose children were deliberately raised on string instruments from a young age (because they resonate deeply through their bodies and minds when played), I am a push for any creative work that encourages community-mindedness and music-making. Especially when accompanied by music as beautiful and eloquent as the one in this book.

A captivating story that is adorned with gorgeous, detailed illustrations and set against the backdrop of a stunning musical accompaniment that can be heard on the EK Books website. This package with printed books and music represents an innovative, expansive and perhaps even bold vision, happily taking us into the wider world of creative arts.

Such a gift.
