2022 Trev finally arrives in Texas – a long time to come

So called, because sometimes it seemed like it would never happen. Image: Yorkshire items pictured at Amsterdam Airport Schipol bought for 2020, at last, they too were leaving. The cup is a veteran, the other three were making their debut in Texas

the outward journey

04.11.22 – 1) The alarm sounds, one twenty, the departure day has begun

Wash the dress, final packing, make sure nothing is missing.

Coffee to start the day, the taxi arrives, I’m on my way

Arrive earlier than expected, wait for check in, not discouraged

But for a slight sense of apprehension and tension.

Staff arrive, Check In comes to life, I’m in the queue, I’m done soon

Customs, slight delay, bag removed

Checked, nothing wrong found, everything returned to normal

Breakfast, then a wait, until you are called to the boarding gate.

That says I need to be at gate 203 so I’m bound and soon found

Sit back and wait until opening time and I just wrote the first rhyme of this tour.

2) Door opens, we are called to board, checked baggage is being stored

Seats found, hand luggage stored correctly, prepare for the flight

Five fifty-five, things come to life

Safety instructions given on the move for us to stand still.

Engines at full power, that’s it, we’re in flight

Altitude reached, no ear plugging, no stop

Until we get to Amsterdam, then change planes to Uncle Sam’s land

3) Amsterdam ahead, family still in bed

Still up in the air, I’ll text when I get there

Because this traveling guy now uses WhatsApp

It suits me because I can text anywhere for free

4) First flight, now daylight, down the English Channel

Down we go, soon it will be the end of the flight, stage one of my journey

So he sends a progress report to Homer’s family.

I can say that so far things have been going well

5) A little wait to get off the plane, soon we will be on the move again

All good as we depart for Gate 9.

Find the door and prepare for a four hour wait.

And pass the time, making another diary in rhyme

6) Waiting for Gate F9 to open another 2 hours and it will be fine

There’s no need to worry, there’s no rush

Don’t do anything too demanding, sit back and relax.

But all in all, I can’t wait until we’re in the air again.

7) It was supposed to be boarding time, but our hopes dimmed

An announcement came, “Cleanup not finished yet”

Queue stalled, please wait longer to be called

And I’ll finish this rhyme, hoping we get out on time

8) The weather subsiding we keep waiting

Things could be apprehensive, catering services are still charging

And I find that boarding is now 20 minutes behind

So there might be a delay before we leave.

Because they just told us a profit, they haven’t finished cleaning the plane yet.

Still not suitable for the long flight.

But catering services have just disappeared.

So the question is, “How soon can we start?”

9) Boarding has finally started, not too discouraged

Families first, then the rest, to get us cleared, the staff goes to great lengths.

On board, seat found, ready to go

But it is announced, another delay, not all the luggage stored

Finally everything is done, the shooting has begun, to the track we run

Now we’re there, full power and we’re in the air

Austin more than ten hours away, finally the poets of The Road on their way

10) I am on the plane thinking that all that worry was in vain

Will my back withstand the strain?

Will my ear infection go away? That was another fear.

Would it be like a song, then my paperwork would be wrong?

Looking at the dark side, woe to you!

If things went wrong one more time, would he really be in pain?

The something encourages me endlessly

I look at the information screen and discover that we are only two minutes behind.

17:15 should have been now arrival time is estimated at 17:17

11) There are still more than seven hours left, the monitor screen says so

I put my watch on Texas time and then I see it’s 10:23

IF you look at the music albums, there’s Simon and Garfunkel

It’s on and I’m all ears, memories of my adolescence

Keep me from feeling sad, good acoustics too

Sure the sound is sweet, hands and feet tapping to the beat

Relax and smile, but I kind of wish I had had some country style.

12) In Austin it’s two o’clock, I’m taking stock

Of what has been a restorative flight

Now seeing the progress on the monitor screen

Canada under 1604 miles to go

I tried Wi-Fi on my phone but it’s been a pain

Doesn’t seem to work on the plane.

Try most of the time, but just don’t want to play

I can always try again when we land, texting home would be great

In WhatsApp for free, the wonders of technology

13) Over white clouds we go, the Great Lakes below

On our way over Canada, we’ll soon be over the US.

Sat Nav set to where I want to be and saved to history

When we land, it’s right there at hand.

There is no time to lose, but in a hurry. Follow their instructions to the letter

Get to my accommodation the sooner the better

Telling me the way at the end of a long day

14) South we go, Dallas down, 26 minutes to go

We’ve made up some time as I look and find, we’re only 10 minutes behind

Now the engine sounds like it’s slowing down and we’re going down

And after I finish this score I’ll be in Austin once again
